Who We Are
Beach Sessions is
A pioneering performance series supporting and presenting site-responsive work by New York-based choreographers in Rockaway Beach, Queens.
An outdoor public program providing dance performances, public events, and environmental initiatives.
Free and open to the public.
The mission of Beach Sessions Dance Series is to support creativity in the Rockaways, inspire sustained investment in the natural beauty of the Rockaway shoreline, and facilitate public engagement with contemporary dance on the peninsula.
Through its public programming and outdoor performances, Beach Sessions stimulates critical dialogue about art and the environment in the broader community of Rockaway Beach, Queens. With collaboration inherent to its mission, Beach Sessions brings the visionary edge of dance to a democratic audience, with art made and presented in Rockaway that is fused with interventions for environmental awareness and action.
Beach Sessions was established in the winter of 2015 with the goal to explore the creative capacity of dance, in its myriad of forms, and its potential to encourage environmental change in the area. Within its first year, it launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and formed instrumental partnerships with local institutions such as Rockaway Artists Alliance, Surfrider, and NYC Parks. These efforts supported the creative processes of four choreographers and two photographers, produced eight outdoor performances on Beach 84th for over 1,000 people, actively addressed local environmental issues through a weekly beach cleanup, and produced a photo catalog distributed at New York Art Book Fair.
